Miss America 2012 is out of the starting gate! Last night was the first of three preliminary nights of competition. Winners on this first night were Miss Utah Danica Olsen for lifestyle and fitness/aka swimsuit and Miss Wisconsin Laura Kaeppeler for talent (operatic solo). Winning a preliminary competition is strong, but not a 100% accurate predictor that the candidate will make the finals.

The new Miss and Mister Bavaria 2012 (Miss und Mister Bayern 2012) are gorgeous, dark-haired Christina Trost, 23, and Dominic Fischer (ditto on the 23, gorgeous, and dark-haired, plus he stands 1m77). Miss Bavaria 2012 runners-up were Akgün Gülsen and Stefanie Fürst. In the men's department, the runners-up were Florian Keck and Daniel Griemer. The venue for this year's Miss and Mister Bavaria 2012 contest, which was held yesterday, was again the main shopping mall in Nuremburg. 29 women and 7 seven competed for the coveted titles. If you add shopping mall, co-ed pageant, bademode, and lederhosen, you have what is probably one of Dean Harris' favorite pageants of the year! While we didn't have Lucas Malvacini Mister Brazil 2011 to party with (he was busy with some New Year's Eve or Réveillon or whatever they call it photoshoot), we more than made do with Beauty School star graduates Mister Bulgaria 2006 Ali Aliev and Mister Lleida 2011 Alberto Roig. Party-boy that he is, Boris led the way to where he works part-time, Discothéque Aziyadé and Al-Ándalus, just off Highway One, where Ali and Alberto were the star attractions, respectively, not to mention a certain bartender and DJ. Oh, and by the way, given the massive hang-overs these BS faculty members and staff have, the holiday break has been extended by a few days - classes will resume on Thursday.

WARRIOR OF THE COMMONWEALTH

OMG! Talk about a contest that has beautiful women, gorgeous men (in uniforms!), and is truly co-ed, as in the men and women compete for the same title! We are talking Warrior of the Commonwealth (Воин Содружества in Russian). The international competition, held in October 2011, brought together service men and women from Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Ukraine. There were boot-camp competitions as well as on-stage competitions. At the final ceremony on 17 October 2011, tall, blond Alexander Lemeshev emerged the victor, also winning the Mister Moscow 2011 title.

University student Bongani Dlakama, 23, is the new Miss Bulawayo. She won the contest on Friday, 19 December 2011. Runners-up were Precious Dube 23, and Valerie Chingonzo, 20. The new Miss Bulawayo takes over from Nadia Gori, Zimbabwe's beauty delegate at Miss Tourism International 2011. Former Miss Zimbabwe and Miss World 1981 semifinalist Juliet Nyathi was guest of honour at the event.

MISS VOLGOGRAD 2011

Irina Barska, 20, won the Miss Volgograd 2011 title on December 25, 2011. Runners-ups were Anastasia Ovchinnikov, 20, and Elena Karaybog, 17. While all three stunning beauties won tickets to exotic, tropical Goa in India, Irina won a ticket to Miss Russia 2012.

ROSE QUEEN 2012

Tournament of Roses President Richard Jackson officially crowned Queen Drew Washington as the 2012 Rose Queen in Pasadena, CA, on Thursday, 27 October 2011. As Rose Queen 2012, Drew will oversee the annual Tournament of Roses Parade and the Rose Bowl Game on 02 January 2012.

Susan Mtegha, 24, is the new Miss Malawi 2011. Holding a diploma in Business Information Systems, Susan won the title over 13 other contestants in the wee hours of Saturday, 24 December 2011. MISS UNIVERSE RS 2012

Miss Teutônia Gabriela Markus, 23, is the new Miss Universe RS (Rio Grande do Sul) 2012. She won the title on December 22, 2011, during a glittering gala held at the Associação Leopoldina Juvenil in Porto Alegre. First runner-up was Miss Pelotas Athena Cunha; second runner-up was Miss Santa Maria Vitória Machado Bisognin; third runner-up was Miss Porto Alegre herself Suélen da Silva Camargo; and fourth runner-up was Miss Osório, Luisa Bastos Nava. 30 women competed for the crown and the right to represent Rio Grande do Sul at Miss Universe Brazil 2012.

The Star, 31-Dec-2011: Malaysia's Aileen Gabriella Robinson defeated 53 competitors to win the Miss Tourism International 2011 crown. The 22-year-old dance instructor did the country proud by being the first Malaysian to win in the pageant's 15-year history. “I feel overwhelmed and hope to use this opportunity to promote the 1Malaysia concept to the world,” she said aftter the event. Robinson's mother is part Chinese and part Indian while her father is English. Reigning Miss Tourism International 2010 Nathalie Den Dekker from the Netherlands handed over the crown to the new queen.Runners-up were Carolina Cerrud from Panama, who bagged the Miss Tourism Metropolitan title; Patsaraporn Khonkhamhaeng of Thailand, who was named the Miss Tourism Global International title; Singapore's Amanda Leong Li Ting, winner of the Miss Miss Cosmopolitan International 2011; and Jana Kopecka of the Czech Republic, who garnered the title of of Dreamgirl of the Year International 2011.

Miss Las Palmas 2011

Miss Azuaje Esther Pérez Ramón is the new Miss Las Palmas 2011. She won the title last Saturday night, during a glittering ceremony outdoors in Plaza Santa Ana. She beat out 25 other women for the coveted title and will now represent Las Palmas at Miss Spain 2012. First runner-up was was Miss Maspalomas Coral Gutiérrez Paniagua and second runner-up was Miss Pacha Anaís Ramos Ortiz.

Mister Nicaragua 2011

On 06 December, at the Hilton Hotel in Managua, Mister Matagalpa, Sergio García, 20 and a civil engineer student, beat off 10 other men for the coveted title of Mister Nicaragua 2011. Not only did super stud Sergio win the Mister Nicaragua 2011 title, but also several sub-titles, including “Mister Sonrisa," “Mister Fotognico,” and “Mister Mejor Cabello.” And this is not to mention “Mister Mejor Cuerpo” first runner-up.

The glorious new Mister Spain 2011 is Diego Otero, or as they say in Castellano, el flamante Míster España 2011. He is just a few credits away from a degree in physical education and has played for several soccer teams. Currently, he plays defense on Madridejos. Here is what he told a Toledan magazine in advance of the Mister Spain 2011 contest: "Claro que tengo opciones de ser Míster España.. Creo que doy el perfil y reúno las condiciones adecuadas. Soy un chico seguro de sí mismo que sabe de sus posibilidades y de sus límites. Lo digo con absoluta humildad pero pienso que tengo una sonrisa bonita y un cuerpo compensado." The new Mister Spain is Mister Toledo Diego Otero, 24, a mighty 1m90, and soccer player (futbolista sounds so much sexier in Spanish). He also won the title of Mister Elegancia. He shined all night - talk about rising to the occasion at the exact right time - and he blew (away) the competition with his response to the final question.

First runner-up was Mister Jaen Bartolomé Márquez, 26 and standing an even more mighty 1m92; second runner-up was Mister Las Palmas Néstor Acosta, 24 and 1m85; third runner-up was Mister Zaragoza Ismael Gomez, 20, and a mighty fine 1m91; fourth runner-up was Mister Sevilla Rafael Fernandez, 26 and 1m81; and fifth runner-up was Mister Barcelona Gerard Espinosa, 25 and also a mighty 1m90. Miss Guatemala City Laura Godoy, 23 and 1m73, won the Miss Universe Guatemala 2012 title last night. She will now represent her Central American nation in Miss Universe 2012. Miss Quetzaltenango Monique Aparico, 20, won the Miss Guatemala World 2012 title and will travel to exotic Mongolia for the Miss World 2012 contest. Winning the Miss Guatemala International 2012 crown was Christa Garca.
