Last weekend Dean Harris was in New York City, which hosted the 1981 Miss Universe Pageant, and came across this rare candid photo of the top five finalists. To our students we offer this challenge: What do you think Miss Belgium, Dominique Van Eeckhoudt, is saying in this photo? The student with the best answer will be allowed to skip the Aqua-Net hairspray class next week. May the best delegate win.
Challenge Re-Signs for Miss World Competition
LONDON, November 19: For the third consecutive year, Virgin Media Television's family entertainment channel Challenge will be the exclusive U.K. home for the Miss World Competition.
Through a deal with the Miss World Organization and Zeal Entertainment, Challenge will air the live two-hour event, held this year in Johannesburg, South Africa, on December 13. Last year's airing of the competition boosted the channel's slot average by 186 percent.
Dave Clarke, the controller of Challenge, said: "Miss World is a perfect fit for Challenge, as the ratings have shown in recent years. We're proud to be the U.K. television home of the spectacular final for the third year running and can't wait for this extravaganza to inject some much needed, sunshine, glitz and glamour to the winter schedule."

Why its as sweet as maple syrup from Vermont. Vermont has only fielded one winner at the Miss USA pageant and that was Carlene King Johnson in 1955. She looks radiant in this photo, in the classic pose of the era. Great gams and boy that trophy sure looks like she'd need a wheel barrow to get it home.

From Colombia Reports
The newly crowned Miss Colombia, Michelle Rouillard Estrada from Cauca, will immediately start committing herself to the preparations needed for Miss Universe 2009, she told Colombian radio.
In an interview with W Radio, she will start preparations this week so Colombia has a chance of having a universal beauty queen at the upcoming Miss Universe in Venezuela.
"Being Miss Colombia means to assist and to work for Colombia. I want to prepare myself very well to see if I can get the desired crown for the country," she said.
The 21-year old student spent the last four years in Canada, but says the love for her country brought her back to compete in the country's most prestigious beauty pageant."As a child I wanted to be Miss, I loved it. When I grew up it didn't seem much of a probability, because focusing on work and study I didn't think I'd be Miss Colombia," she said.
During Miss Chandi's master class, she pointed out that there was a Miss Universe Pageant back in the 1920's and 1930's. We feature a photo here from the 1930 pageant won by Dorothy Goff Dell of New Orleans. She would go on to star on Broadway in the Ziegfield Follies and then Hollywood came a calling. She appeared in four films before dying tragically in an auto accident in 1934. We're not sure if this photo represents the semi-finalists or if this was the total number of contestants.

Dostana is the first Bollywood feature film to focus on a gay relationship, but with a Three's Company twist. Dostana, which means friendship in Hindi, is about two guys (Sameer and Kunal), a girl (Neha), and an apartment. Sameer and Kunal meet each other while looking for an apartment to rent. They are interested in the same apartment, but the owner only rents the apartment to girls. Seems her niece lives in one of the rooms. Sameer and Kunal pretend to be lovers and the owner agrees to rent them the other room in apartment. Even though their plan works, the boys are in a predicament as they both fall in love with the owner’s niece, Neha, who of course thinks they are gay.
